Welcome to Dormershire Wine Estate

Location
Dormershire is the Stellenbosch wine estate closest to Cape Town and  offers a magnificent view of Table Mountain from the vineyards. The previous owner named the property after his wife Doris, and two daughters Merle and Shirley, by abbreviating their names and then forming an anagram of sorts, probably a clever way of avoiding a family fight. He did not actually grow any grapes at the time and there were only 20 old vines scattered about the property when the present owners Paul and Sunette Frost acquired it during 1986. Planting of vines  commenced in the mid-nineties.

Size
Dormershire is a boutique wine estate comprising only 8 hectares with 2.5 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.5 hectares of Shiraz and one hectare of Sauvignon Blanc.  Approximately 50 tons of grapes are harvested per year, which produces about 50,000 bottles of wine.

Quality
All grapes are picked by hand and then a further selection is done by hand on the sorting table to ensure  that only the best quality grapes are used.  The Estate is in close proximity to both Table Bay and False  Bay with their cool ocean breezes and enjoys the benefit of the temperate ocean climate.  The red wines are aged in French or American oak barrels for up to 18 months. The winemaker is Michelle Louw a Stellenbosch University B.Sc. graduate.

Products
The main range of products includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Shiraz, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and a Sauvignon Blanc.  A small quantity of lightly wooded Rose and a sweet Shiraz in the Jerepigo style are also produced. Wines are mostly sold directly from the estate and in a few selected outlets. The Wine of the Month Club regularly buys from the estate.

Dormershire Barrel Owners
Selling wine by the barrel is a new concept recently introduced by the estate.  This is known as en primeur in French and is quite popular in Bordeaux. Barrel owners age their wine under supervision of the the winemaker and get the opportunity to entertain their friends and clients to regular barrel tastings.
